There are four major regions to the game, any of which may be a character's point of origin (although some more easily than others).
Kalmar
Istria's northern neighbor, Kalmar is generally a colder land, despite being coastal. Its terrain is rough, the people of its tribes tall and pale. Shipping and trade drive the Kalmarian economy, with carpentry and everything wooden coming a very close second. The tainted, and everything they represent, are even more ruthlessly dispatched in Kalmar than they are in Istria — and the country's few mages are prized above anything else save the finest of ships.
Istria
Istria is the more southern of the two nations; its capital city, Maratha, is the game's setting. Its terrain is predominantly on the flat side, its people generally darker in color. Agriculture, textiles, and metalwork are the three most important exports — or they were, before the country lost half of its land to the comet's tainted power. What remains of Istria is always under siege by that power and the lives it has claimed.

The Fringe
Once part of Istria, the Fringe is composed of those areas abandoned by civilization after five farming villages literally tore themselves asunder — areas no longer resembling farmland in the least. It is not entirely unoccupied by humans… but contains an even higher percentage of creatures warped and tainted.
The Broken Lands
Somewhere beyond the Fringe lie the Broken Lands, also called the Tainted Lands. None who have traveled there since the comet fell ever returned; what lives there is as much a mystery as the comet itself.
