Dairine's description is more detailed than strictly necessary (but that's usually good in descriptions). As a rule, a paragraph or two is the minimum requirement for all fields below this point.
Description
Dairine is tall. Very tall. Easily over six feet. Almost all of it muscle and bone. She's not the sort of personyou want to meet in a dark alley (or in a small room, for that matter), but at least you'd see her coming. Between the pale, if sun-tanned, skin and the long blonde hair, she can't be mistaken for anything other than Kalmarian. That hair is usually contained in a tight braid that falls between her shoulderblades, keeping everything but the occasional wisp away from sea-blue eyes.
There's a lot of scars on her skin. Most across her hands, short little things that speak of sparring battles, but the one that rakes diagonally from her left ear up to her scalp is significant. Somehow, it doesn't really detract from her appearance — which is fairly plain to begin with, but brightened by a combination of good cheer and a devil-may-care attitude. Dairine is usually smiling, if not laughing — but sometimes it's scarier than not.
She always wears trousers; /always/. Plain brown leather; nothing fancy about them, nor the boots beneath. Her blouses vary, from something equally plain to those frilled and embroidered enough for any female. If outdoors, Dairine is nearly always in the company of her glaive — a six-foot pole of oak sheathed in iron with another foot-and-a-half of curved steel on the end. The dagger at her waist — and its smaller counterpart in her left boot — go everywhere.
History
Dairine was born in eastern Kalmar, and from a young age had a penchant for curiosity and trouble. She ran half-wild with her brothers (twins, one and a half years older) throughout their youth, and paid attention only to the things that interested her. That's probably why she wound up on a ship at 14 — not because home didn't want her, but because home was boring.
She started that voyage with some training in sword, dagger, and seafaring; ended it several hundred miles to the east with a little more dagger experience and a lot more practical marine knowledge. Dare settled into that city for exactly as long as it held her interest - which turned out to be a while, once she found and fell in love with the glaive that was popular there.
Then she started world-hopping. This ship, that caravan, the town over the next hill… whatever caught her attention and could keep her for a while. Abandoning the sword, Dairine generally took her glaive and dagger (especially the glaive) and hired on as a guard to work her way around. Eventually, these travels brought her back to Maratha — where, only a figurative stone's throw from home, she's currently inclined to stay.
Why Maratha? …Why not? If nothing else, the place is interesting…
…and even if she hasn't been home in something like twenty years, well, home's probably still boring.
In Maratha, Dairine soon settled with two jobs — freelance guard and barmaid at the Albatross. Somehow, the two jobs aren't contradictory… especially given that all Dare does at the Albatross is wait tables. And break up barfights that get out of hand. She's quite good at that.
Personality
Dairine is… well, she has a stubborn streak. And a foolhardy one. Setting off voyaging at 14, after all, isn't the most sensical thing to do. She tends to take things in stride, though if anyone ever even suggests she can't take care of herself, as it were, they generally find themselves in trouble. Lots of it. Dare's known for running into trouble and getting herself back out, if not always without a scratch; she doesn't tempt fate, but she doesn't have an overly strong sense of self-preservation either. She turns down very few challenges (if any); according to some, that's the original source of her nickname.
Abilities
Well, there's the glaive. And then there's the glaive, and the dagger, too. Dairine wields both quite well, and while she's out of practice with swords, she still knows how to use your average blade. Her aim is decent, for being untrained. She knows a smattering of languages from the eastern seaboard - ones that have probably never been spoken within Istria's borders — and can sail almost anything in almost any weather. She's also good at gutting fish, scrubbing decks, and mending sails. Not so many 'ladylike' pastimes - but then, no one's ever accused Dairine of being a lady.
